MRU Prof Wins Prestigious Fellowship

During the 2015-16 academic year, Kit Dobson will be taking his sabbatical in Montreal. During the winter semester, he will be the Eakin Visiting Fellow in Canadian Studies at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada. His project during his fellowship, which has the working title Mall Culture Superstars, is a book on malls in Canada. It focuses on such wide ranging sites as Vancouver's Kitsilano, West Edmonton Mall, Toronto's Eaton Centre, the Montreal Forum, the Mic Mac Mall in Dartmouth, strip malls on the prairies, and the Wal-Mart in Whitehorse. Each of these prompts an investigation of historical, social, cultural, environmental, and political issues that we might connect with the experience of being consumers in contemporary Canada, and each is paired with writing, film, and art pieces that allow us to think through th
e peculiar practice of shopping.
